ELA (Period HR 11)

Course Description

Welcome back! This week in ELA we will be discussing, creating, and writing about New Year's Resolutions. In addition, we will be learning about the author of our upcoming story, Cynthia Rylant. Our new story is called Stray, which we will begin reading next week. To prepare for our new story, we will practice using context clues to determine the meaning of our new vocabulary words!

Life Skills Week of 2.24-2.28

This week in Life Skills we will begin discussing money. We will learn to identify different coins and their value. In addition, we will begin to practice making change. Students will be able to role play a customer and a cashier to practice spending money and making change.

ELA Week of 2.10-2.14

This week in ELA we will be participating in the ELA Winter Olympics. Students will work with a partner and represent a country. Each day we will be reviewing a different skill that has been taught. They will review and practice these skills through a series of Olympic games. The schedule is: Monday-Blurt, Tuesday-Grammar Hoop, Wednesday-Inferencing Bowling, and Thursday- Homophone Tag!

Life Skills Week of 2.10-2.14

This week in ELA we will be writing a recipe and following the necessary steps to make and eat Oreo Cookie Balls. We will also be discussing the different cooking measurement terms.

ELA Week of 2.3-2.7

This week in ELA we will be learning how to write a formal letter. We will be writing a letter to the owner of the pound in Stray to complain about its conditions. The students will be writing to convince the owner to improve the conditions and offer suggestions on how to do so.

Life Skills Week of 2.3-2.7

This week during Life Skills we will be preparing to make snacks for next weeks class. We will be looking at prices of food and writing the recipe that we will need to follow in order to make our snacks.

ELA

This week in ELA we will be taking a test on the story, Stray. We will also be learning about irregular past tense verbs and practice using irregular past tense verbs in written sentences. Lastly, we will be reading an article on Groundhog Day and answering comprehension questions to practice referring to the text to locate an answer.

Life Skills

This week in Life Skills we will begin our grocery store unit. We will discuss how grocery stores are arranged, how to make change when purchasing groceries, how to read cooking measurements, and practice following recipes. A permission slip will be sent home so that we can begin practicing these skills in the classroom by making different treats.

Life Skills Week of 1.23

This week in Life Skills we will finish working on following 1-2 step directions. Students will be practicing this skill through a series of tasks, such as drawing and coloring. While we will be finishing this Life Skills unit, we will continue practicing this skill. 

ELA Week of 1.21-1.24

This week in ELA we will be finishing our story. Students will be working on a review packet that focuses on using text evidence to support their answers and using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words. Students will be having a test on Tuesday, January 28th. I have attached a copy of the study guides.

ELA Week of 1.13-1.17

This week in ELA we will begin analyzing the plot of the short story, Stray. We will be reading the story as a class and students will independently be answering the comprehension questions. Students will work with a partner to complete a plot diagram. Please do not have the students go ahead in their comprehension packets. The questions will be assigned based on how far into the reading we get each day.

Life Skills Week of 1.13-1.17

This week in Life Skills we will continue working on following 1-2 step directions. They will be practicing this skills through a series of tasks, such as drawing and coloring. 

Life Skills Week of 1.4-1.10

This week we will be reading about and practicing following directions. We will read an interactive story about to brothers trying to follow directions and what could happen as a result of not following them. Students will demonstrate their ability to follow directions by playing the game Simon Says and participating in a directed drawing activity.
