ELA (Period HR 11)

Course Description

Welcome back! This week in ELA we will be discussing, creating, and writing about New Year's Resolutions. In addition, we will be learning about the author of our upcoming story, Cynthia Rylant. Our new story is called Stray, which we will begin reading next week. To prepare for our new story, we will practice using context clues to determine the meaning of our new vocabulary words!

Monday, 3/30 -> Review of Main Idea

Please see the video above so we can go through today's lesson together. This nearpod lesson is a review of Main Idea. It is intended to refresh your memory of the skill and practice applying it. ELA Wednesday 3.25 &Thursday 3.26-Wanted Poster

This activity is intended to take two days to complete. It is okay if you need more time to complete it. The students are encouraged to use their imaginations and express their creativity for this project. 
 
The 1st page of this packet is a template students can use to complete the novel summary presented on page 4. This is the only portion of the book report that students need to follow the story, Dragon, Dragon for. If need be, the study guide attached to yesterday's work can help fill in the blanks on the summary template.
 
The 2nd page of the PDF can be filled out as follows:
Title: Dragon, Dragon
Author: John Gardiner
Genre: Fairytale
Wanted: Dragon
 
The remainder of the sections (Reward Amount, Physical Description, Wanted For, and Last Seen) can be completed using nothing but the students' imaginations. 
 
As mentioned above, the novel summary will be completed using the template provided on page 1 of the packet.
 
You do not need to arrange the sections to create a poster-- you can leave it in packet format.

ELA Friday 3/27 Reading Comprehension (Based on Movies)

Students have the opportunity to choose which movie they want to read and answer questions about. The options for this assignment are Toy Story (pg. 1) or Cars (pg. 2). Please read one of  the passages and answer the questions. Students do not need to write out their answers. They just need to underline the answer in the color that is assigned to the question.

Life Skills Monday 3.23-HR 11 & 13 Unscramble Money and Count Money Packet

On page 1 & 2 of the packet, use the picture provided to count the money and unscramble the given numbers so that the numbers represent the amount of money shown in the picture. 
 
On page 3 of the packet you are practicing making change. Look at the amount of money you have versus the amount of money you spend to count the change you should receive. Draw a picture of the coins that make up the amount of change you should receive. 

Life Skills Wednesday 3.25- HR 11 & 13- Chilly Change Game

Please print the Chilly Change game and cut out the cards! First, set up the board and place the "chilly cards" in a pile. Next, each player should pick a playing piece (penguin, polar bear, snowman). Then, pick a chilly card and do what it says. When you land on the space, count up the change shown on that spot. Continue adding up your change as you move along the playing board. Whoever has the most amount of money at the end of the game wins. 

ELA Week of 3.9-3.13

This week in ELA students will finish reading Dragon, Dragon. As we read, we will be analyzing the different characters, identifying their internal traits, and locating supporting evidence. The students will be having a test next Wednesday, March 18th. A study guide will be sent home at the end of the week.

Life Skills Week of 3.9-3.13

This week in Life Skills students will be working on counting coins and making change when paying with $1. Students will also be able to practicing playing the roles of a cashier and customer to practice making purchases and making change. 

ELA Week of 2.24-2.28

This week in ELA we will prepare to read our new story, Dragon, Dragon by John Gardiner. On Monday, we will be discussing the different characteristics of a fairytale. On Tuesday, we will begin to discuss the new vocabulary words presented in the story. Students will use context clues to determine the meaning of the unknown words. On Wednesday, we will be discussing the importance of character traits, both internal and external. We will be learning about how identifying different character traits based on a characters words and actions give readers more information about them. Students will be able to examine their own character traits and create a picture of themselves. On Thursday and Friday, we will be reading the new story and examining the different characters.
