UPK 2

Course Description

Just uploading the letters we send home this week, as well as a picture of Teddy Tiegerman and the letter that it is inside his notebook. I have also uploaded the letter that you will receive with the poster, when your child is chosen to be the star student the following week. I am currently waiting for the photographs to be uploaded from this week, from the school's camera (the only one we are permitted to use, for your child's safety.).

This week we learned all about farms, concentrating on farm animals. Every day, the children unpack their folders and notebooks, and as they put them in the container on the desk, they move their names, which are written on magnets to answer the question of the day. The questions this week were; “Have you ever been to a farm?”, “Do you like apples?”, “Would you want to be a farmer?”, “Have you ever grown a sunflower?” and “Do you know a veteran?”. Their answers and reasons for wanting or not wanting to be a farmer were very creative!
We learned about farm animals and what their babies were called, we drew a farm (and told a teacher what to label everything), we made a list of farm animals and created our favorite with all of its body parts labeled. They also drew a picture of what they would do/have if they were farmer.
We read “Esther the Wonder Pig” and illustrated the problem and solution, we read “Giggle, Giggle, Quack” and drew our favorite character (and had a teacher write why that character was chosen), and we read “If you were a farmer”, which detailed all the chores a farmer does. The children loved the story “Mrs. Wishy Washy’s Farm”; they joined in chorally reading the repeating parts.
In math we worked on size order, (small, medium, and large), recognizing numbers, and counting. We learned the letters O and P this week – the teacher’s helper leads the class in going through the fundations alphabet (with my help, when needed). We also watch a short video, on storybots to learn about things that start with the letter we are learning.
Thank you to all the families that emailed me a photograph of your family; we printed them and have them in the children’s cubbies and on the wall in the library. The children love seeing their families and explaining who everyone is to us and to their friends. If you have not sent a picture in yet, please feel free to email me it.
Next week we will be learning about harvest time, and what is grown on farms. We will also be learning letters Q and R. As well as having our first guest reader coming in!
