Ivan describes Varenka and the ball. Varenka is beautiful in every possible way and nice/polite to everyone.
Ivan is passionately in love with Varenka. He provides specific descriptions of her and the dancing.
Another man dances with Varenka but Ivan later describes that Varenka actually does show affection (love) for Ivan.
Ivan dances with Varenka several times.

-Ivan tells a story about his youth. This is a flashback.
-Varenka is a girl that Ivan liked when he was younger.
-Ivan is very unhappy. His tone and choice of words indicate that his relationship did not end happily. He also identifies that Varenka was the greatest love of his life.
Ivan says that Varenka was majestic. He admired that she is beautiful and carried herself with pride and dignity (like a queen). This is very important to understand why Varenka and Ivan are no longer together at the end of the text.
