September 18th Review

Word Review: imploring, boding

Concepts and Understandings
1) Foreshadowing
2) Henry's behavior is strange (keeping the house exactly as the wife decorates/keeps the home, holding up the picture and asking the narrator to stay at his home, repeatedly organizing and fixing decorations that are out of place).
3) Predictions: What happened to Henry's wife? Who is lying? Are the neighbors lying to Henry? Is Henry lying to the narrator?

A Review of Events in the Text
- Henry uses the picture of the wife to keep the narrator at the house until Saturday.
- Why does the narrator stay? [There is more than one answer]
Does he want company? Is he  uninterested or bored with life? (The idea of seeing someone different makes him want to see Henry's wife.) Does he want to meet this beautiful woman?

-Henry updates the neighbors with a letter that he gets from his wife.
- The neighbors decide to throw Henry's Wife a party on Saturday.
- Henry believes she will return but he grows nervous as the time approaches and she is not around.

September 16 Review

Word review: balmy

Events from the Text:
-The narrator enjoys looking at Henry's home because of the decorations. Many of the prospectors/miners lived a very poor and plain life. he was excited to see something different and beautiful for a change.

-Henry keeps the house exactly as his wife organized and decorated the home. He claims that she is 19 years old and also states the wife is not around. [This is suspicious. Students should infer that Henry's wife is dead or that Henry is lying to some degree].

-The narrator sees a picture of Henry's wife. He ultimately decides to stay because she will return on Saturday and the narrator would like to meet her.

Why does the narrator stay?
[There are many opinions]
The narrator is so lonely and miserable that he wants company. Because she is so beautiful and sociable, he would enjoy speaking to her.

Please note: the narrator does NOT want to start a relationship with Henry's wife.

Character Flashcards

This is just a short document that I use to print out flashcards for students.

The first pages are the characters names with pictures (Henry's Wife, Henry, the narrator, and the neighbors) and the next pages give short details about the characters (two on one page) in that order.

It has such a strange layout because the flashcards are printer ready.

Californian Review Questions

This is a series of questions that I use for review games (on Friday September 13, I used these questions for a review game).
This is a list of practice questions that may or may not appear on an exam.
Students are responsible for all information in this file.
This image is just another graphic related to a historical topic that we have studied in class.
This image relates to our historical sources (which were read for one of our first activities in class).

Californianstale notes 2019

This is a series of general events, details, or general understandings that students must comprehend as they read the text.

Many of these details become textual annotations that students make in class as we read.
