P.E. and Health - Week of December 16th

Physical Education
This week in physical education the students will be playing a popular holiday game called Capture the Reindeer. The students will be placed on two teams and must work together to capture the other team's reindeer. This game focuses on creating strategies with your teammates and using teamwork to accomplish the goal. Good sportsmanship is always encourages and expected throughout the lesson.

Health
This week in health the students will be learning about how to properly wash their hands to help prevent the spread of pathogens. The students will learn about the eight steps used to properly scrub your hands to ensure they are free of disease causing germs. We will be using a product called Glo Germ which allows the students to test their ability to properly wash their hand. Glo Germ in a hand lotion that glows under blacklight. The students will use the lotion and then wash their hands to attempt to get rid of the "germs". This will allow them to see how well they scrub and how difficulty it can be to completely rid your hands of pathogens! 

P.E. and Health - Week of December 9th

Physical Education
This week in physical education the students will playing their final week of Scooter European Handball. This game allows the students to work in teams to score as many goals as possible while riding on a floor level scooter. Along with the concepts of throwing and catching, the students will be utilizing their teamwork skills to score as many goals as they can all while riding on a scooter throughout open space.
 
Health
This week in health the students will continue their Disease Prevention unit! This unit covers a variety of topics relating to diseases, how they are spread, what they do to the body, and how we can prevent getting sick. This week the students will be learning about different communicable diseases such as viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and fungi. This unit will cover important and useful techniques that the students can use to help prevent the spread of pathogens and to stay healthy.

P.E. and Health - Week of December 2nd

Physical Education
This week in physical education the students will continue playing a popular game called Scooter European Handball. This game allows the students to work in teams to score as many goals as possible while riding on a floor level scooter. Along with the concepts of throwing and catching, the students will be utilizing their teamwork skills to score as many goals as they can all while riding on a scooter throughout open space.
 
Health
This week in health the students will begin their Disease Prevention unit! This unit covers a variety of topics relating to diseases, how they are spread, what they do to the body, and how we can prevent getting sick. The students will be learning about the differences between communicable and non-communicable diseases and how both affect the body. This unit will cover important and useful techniques that the students can use to help prevent the spread of pathogens to help keep everyone healthy this winter season.

P.E. and Health - Week of November 25th

Physical Education
This week in physical education the students will be playing a popular game called Scooter European Handball. This game allows the students to work in teams to score as many goals as possible while riding on a floor level scooter. Along with the concepts of throwing and catching, the students will be utilizing their teamwork skills to score as many goals as they can all while riding on a scooter throughout open space.
 
Health
This week in health the students will be finishing the documentary titled Super Size Me. This film documents the dangers associated with consuming fast food regularly, specifically McDonald's food products. Along with this, the students will have the opportunity to work on creating a well balanced Thanksgiving day dinner plate. We will be focusing on selecting the correct portion sizes and how to calculate your calories.

P.E. and Health - Week of November 18

Physical Education
This week in physical education the students will be completing their physical fitness testing. Last week the students completed the standing long jump and the sit and reach. This week they will move onto push-ups and sit-ups to test their abdominal and upper body strength. The students will be given two minutes to complete as many repetitions as possible using correct form. Everyone is encouraged to set their own personal record and to try their best.
 
Health
To bring closure to our nutrition unit, the students will be watching the award winning documentary Super Size Me. This film documents Morgan Spurlock's social experiment in fast-food gastronomy as he only eats McDonald's food products for an entire month. In the process his weight balloons, his energy level plummets and he experiences all sorts of unexpected and terrifying side effects. He also examines the corporate giant's growing role in the lives of American consumers and explores its methods of indoctrinating young people and its contribution to America's obesity epidemic.

P.E. and Health - Week of November 12

Physical Education
This week in physical education the students will be continuing their physical fitness testing. Last week the students completed the running test called the PACER. This week they will move onto the standing long jump to test their ability to jump forward without a running start. This will test the strength and flexibility in the legs! The following test will be the sit and reach which will test for back and hamstring flexibility. All students are encouraged to set their personal best scores which they will try to beat and the end of the school year!

P.E. and Health - Week Of November 4th

Physical Education
This week in physical education the students will be beginning their fitness testing unit. During this unit the students must give their best effort to set their own personal best scores during the different fitness tests. The fitness tests include the cardiovascular endurance test called the PACER, the sit & reach test, the standing long jump, the push-up test, and the sit-up test. The students will be tested at the end of the school year as well to look for improvement. 

Health
This week in health the students will be learning all about nutrition labels. We will talk about the purpose of food labels found on packaging, why they are important to read, and what to look for to stay healthy! The students will read actual food labels from popular products that they consume to get a better understanding of the nutrients and ingredients found inside.

Health - Week of October 28th

Health
This week in health the students will be continuing their nutrition unit with learning about the dangers associated with diet soda. We will be reading an article that explains how soda companies add chemicals to their drinks and how this affects those who consume diet soda regularly. The students will also get the chance to review the 6 different nutrients that essential for maintaining good nutrition. 

P.E. and Health - Week of October 21st

Physical Education
The students will be playing a game called Ghost Hunters where they must work together as a team to capture as many ghosts (bowling pins) as they can. If they get caught on the opposing team's side stealing a ghost they must drop the ghost and return back to their team's side. This game creates opportunities for the students to plan and work together as a team to accomplish the goal. The importance of teamwork and sportsmanship will be reviewed throughout the activity. 
 
Health
This week the students will continue to learn about the importance of nutrition. We will be focusing on the significance of vitamins and minerals and how we can get them from natural sources like fruits and vegetables. We will also discuss the dangers associated with the consumption of diet soda and its effects on the body.
 

P.E. and Health - Week of October 15th

Physical Education
This week in physical education the students will be continuing a unit called Capture The Pumpkin. This modern twist on the classic capture the flag game allows students to work together to try to steal the other team's pumpkin. If they get caught, they must return the pumpkin and try again. The students must demonstrate respect and good sportsmanship to earn any points for their team!
 
Health
The students will be learning about a new "bone of the week" which will be the sternum. The students will also be moving onto the third week of their Nutrition unit. They will be learning about how to create a balanced meal and how to maintain a healthy diet. The class will continue discussing the role of nutrients in food. We will be focusing on the role carbohydrates have on the body and how they relate to energy.
