This Week in English (May 28-31, 2019)

Tuesday & Wednesday: 9th and 10th grade students will explore the writing process as it is used to formulate a personal narrative essay. We will be watching a YouTube video series to help us visualize the process, in addition to completing notes.
 
Thursday & Friday: Students will brainstorm and plan their personal narrative essay. This will all be done in class, and this will count as the final project grade of the fourth marking period. 

This Week in English (May 21-23, 2019)

Tuesday: 9th grade students will continue to read and discuss "The Necklace"/10th grade students will finish their tests.
HOMEWORK: Get tests signed AND do test corrections (this is NOT optional- this counts as TWO homework grades) **DUE THURSDAY**
 
Wednesday: Students will finish reading "The Necklace" (9th grade) and "An Astrologer's Day" (10th grade)
 
 
Thursday: Students will begin to work on their in-class narrative writing project

This Week in Mrs. Thuren's Room (May 13-17, 2019)

ELA 9 & ELA 10- We will be reviewing for Thursday's test Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Please make sure you are reviewing your study guides at home each night to help you prepare, as well.
 
Reading/Writing 9 (HRs 12 & 13 only)- We will continue to read short fictional passages. Your homework each night is to complete any work we did not finish in class. **Reading Logs have been suspended until the end of the school year, HOWEVER you are still encouraged to do independent reading at home or during any other free time.**

TEST May 16th

In addition to the hard copy handed out in class, I have posted a copy of the study guide on the HW page. Please make sure you are studying each night and answering the review questions. The completed study guide is due Monday, May 13th. We will do in-class review May 13th through May 15th to help prepare. 

Test on May 16th

Study Guides will be distributed by the end of this week. Topics will include: elements of a short story, plot diagrams, and the texts we have been reading in class.

REMINDER: Open-Notes Quiz on Thursday

**A copy of the notes will be posted on the HW site once we have finished them in class today (Monday).*
 
You will be using the notes that we have been taking on Character, Theme, Plot, Setting, Narrator and Voice to complete the quiz on April 4th (please note, the questions that you will be asked will be BASED on the notes, which means you will need to reference them in order to answer the questions- you are not simply copying definitions). You should be reviewing your notes each night to help you prepare more for the quiz. We will do an in-class review on Wednesday, April 3rd. 

Open Notes QUIZ- April 4th

You will be using the notes that we have been taking on Character, Theme, Plot, Setting, Narrator and Voice to complete the quiz on April 4th (please note, the questions that you will be asked will be BASED on the notes, which means you will need to reference them in order to answer the questions- you are not simply copying definitions). Make-Up Work

Any missing portfolio work MUST be completed and handed in no later than Monday, April 8th. (We are doing portfolios on Tuesday, March 26th, so you will have a chance then to see what exactly is missing.)

Essay Test- THURSDAY!!!

We will be working on the outline in class using the articles you read last week as homework.
 
Your essay will be written in class on Thursday. You will be scored based on how well you use the texts, the organization of your essay, the structure of your paragraphs, and how well you use grammar, spelling and punctuation. 

This Week in Mrs. Thuren's Room (Week of February 4th)

English 10 and English 9: We will be working on any incomplete work at the beginning of the week. On Wednesday, we will review for your test on Thursday. Friday, we will resume working in our groups on the workbook pages that will help us prepare for writing our essays.
 
Reading and Writing 9: We will continue to read Informational Texts. **There will be NO Reading Logs until AFTER February break.**

This Week in English (Jan. 22-25, 2019)

Monday- NO SCHOOL
Tuesday and Wednesday- REGENTS EXAMS
Thursday and Friday- Continuation of building on our writing skills to help improve our sentences and paragraphs in preparation for argument essay writing (Regents practice)

This Week in English (Jan. 14-18, 2019)

Monday and Tuesday will be spent working on our Marking Period 2 portfolios- this will allow us to see if there is any work missing with plenty of time to make it up (any missing work that has been given must be returned by January 25th).
 
Wednesday through Friday we will continue to work on building our writing skills to help us prepare for practicing how to write an Regents essay. We will be finishing up the packet we started last week (a review of parts of speech), and will begin a new packet this week which focuses on sentence and paragraph structure and content.
