FERPA Letter

Dear Parent/Guardian:

The purpose of this letter is to advise you of your rights with respect to the school records of your child pursuant to the Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA).

Parents/Guardians of a student under the age of 18, have a right to inspect and review their child’s educational records.  In addition, a parent or guardian may request the amendment of any records that are believed to be inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of the student’s privacy rights.  Student records are confidential and may not be released or made available to persons other than the parent/guardian and your child’s school district without written consent.  The only exceptions to this policy are school employees and officials, and certain state and federal officials for whom there is a legitimate educational need to access a student’s records in the course of their employment.

A parent or guardian of a student may request access to their child’s educational records in writing to, the principal. Upon receipt of such a request, arrangements will be made to provide access to such records within a reasonable period of time, but in no case, more than 45 days after a request has been received as per FERPA regulations.  Requests to amend school records should be directed to the Director.  If the request for an amendment is denied, the parent or guardian has a right to request a hearing with the TIEGERMAN Educational Review Board.

Copies of TIEGERMAN School’s policy regarding student records may be obtained at the school reception desk or will be mailed upon receipt of a written request.

Please be advised that a parent or guardian is entitled to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education if it is believed that there was a failure on the part of the School to comply with FERPA and its regulations.  Please see the parent handbook for additional information.

Yours truly,

Michelle Costantino

Principal
