Review November 4 Class Notes

Today I have reviewed the following terms

seize: to grab or capture (usually without permission)

exulting (exultant): to perform an action out of joy or happiness.

Important Events from the Text
Beowulf travels to Denmark.

Beowulf has two reasons for helping Hrothgar
*1) He wants to honor the alliance that Hrothgar has with Ecgtheow (Beowulf's father).*

2) He wants to help defeat Grendel as hrothgar has had little success in defeating the monster.

Hrothgar's lords question Beowulf several times before meeting Hrothgar.
1. The lords questions Beowulf to protect the king. They want to make sure that Beowulf's men are telling the truth and also that they present no danger to the king.

2. This will show that Beowulf follows the rules and respects the culture and traditions of the people of Denmark (and concurrently the culture of the Anglo-Saxons).

Beowulf pledges to fight Grendel by himself in hand to hand combat.
1) Beowulf will not use weapons or armor.
2) This shows his loyalty and respect for Hrothgar in that he is willing to sacrifice himself for King Hrothgar.

Anglo-Saxon Review

There are some understandings that I have reviewed in class that i would like to reiterate:

Anglo-Saxons

Why did the Anglo-Saxons move to England?
The Anglo-Saxons traveled to the United Kingdom because of geologic factors. There were terrible floods in their homeland that destroyed farms and caused famine. As a result this led to fighting between tribes. To solve this problem, the Anglo-Saxons made an alliance with the British kingdoms in exchange for land.
Oral Tradition: Anglo-Saxon spoke and passed down stories from generation to generation

Christian Influence:
-Christian monks recorded the poem
-The monks made changes to the poem to make
the poem more Christian.

September 16th Review

Word Review:
- exile (banish, one is sent away and not allowed to return)
- Wyrd (Anglo-Saxon term for fate)
- wanderer (nomad; a person who travels from place to place)
Important Understandings
1. The wanderer is a character is who alone in the middle of the ocean. The wanderer has lost his family, friends, and all territory as a result of a war.
2. The wanderer feels that nothing could have prevented what has happened to him. he is unable to change the future.
3. The Anglo-Saxons did not feel that one should share feelings (they believed one must be stoic). This is a problem in our story because the speaker is depressed. He loses everything and wants to let out his feelings even though sharing is not very acceptable.
